Title: Cost-effective ion exchange treatments are being developed
Text: "Ion Exchange: Drake Engineering Incorporated is developing a cost-effective treatment process and module to meet any desired treated water quality. The Coal bed Methane Water Treatment System (CBM-WTS) will be capable of treating a full range of chemical compositions of produced water... Modules are being designed to reduce CBM-produced water's alkalinity, salinity, and sodium absorption ratio (SAR). This module will serve approximately 10 new CBM wells or possibly up to 20 equilibrium production wells... Modules will occupy... less than 50 square feet, weigh less than 1000 pounds [when] empty, and will be capable of treating 50 gallons to 1000 gallons of water per minute... A secondary waste brine of less than one percent of the treated water will be produced but can be evaporated and sold as a solid crystalline byproduct... Target unit treatment costs are estimated to be less than one cent per barrel for a large (1000 gpm) system, designed to remove 50 percent of sodium and bicarbonate from typical CBM-produced water, and two cents per barrel for smaller modules. The treated water is expected to be suitable for unrestricted discharge or beneficial use in agriculture, aquaculture, industry, and households, and be cost effective for the CBM producers."
